A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BARRHAVEN LIONS CLUB

The Barrhaven Lions Club was chartered on April 11, 1980 with 41 members. The sponsor was the Ottawa East Lions Club, now the Ottawa-Vanier Lions Club.  The guiding Lion was the late John Bernard of our sponsoring club.  Our Charter President was Lion George Galbraith.  The District Governor of the day was Lion Hal Wagner.  As of today, we have only one of the charter members with the club.  Lion Gus Este who has remained active in the club since the beginning.

The club originally met at the “Barrhaven Restaurant and Tavern,” moving to Larkin House, then to the Cedarhill Golf Course and then to the Barrhaven Mall.  Today, we meet for dinner on the second Monday of each month, except July and August, at the Prince of Wales Manor.  Our business meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month, except July and August, at the Jockvale Heritage School. The Board of Directors meetings are held year-round on the third Monday of the month at the Jockvale Heritage School. We now hold all our meeting at the Legion Hall on Fallowfield Road since September 1, 2010

Over the years the club has successfully hosted the following significant events:

1982 – Zone 13 South   Officers School;

1984 – District A4 Convention;

1989 – Multiple District “A” Convention with the Nepean and Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Clubs;

1994 - Multiple District “A” Convention with the Nepean and Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Clubs;

1999 – District A4 Convention with the Stittsville District Lions Club;

2000 – Celebrated our club’s 20th Charter Anniversary with Dick Tyler, Past International Director as the guest speaker;

2004 – District A4 Convention; and

2005 – Celebrated our 25th Charter Anniversary with Terry Graham, International Director-elect as the guest speaker.

Barrhaven Lions Club members have been very active in both the sub-district and the multiple districts.  Our members have served as secretary, treasurer, region and zone chairmen on the District A4 Cabinet.  As well many of our members have served as committee members and chairmen of both District A4 and the Multiple District “A”.

Additionally, the following club members have served as international officers in the capacity of Governor of District A4 as follows:

90/91   Lion C.W. (Gus) Este

93/94   Lion Orville Hartwick

97/98   Lion Jim Duff

04/05   Lion Dave Voisey

PDG Dave Voisey also served as Chairman of the 2005-06 Multiple District “A” Council.  We have also had a few Past District Governors transfer into our club. They include the late PDG Frank Fairhurs (District A8), PDG Alan Tanner, West Ottawa Lions Club (District A4) and PDG Ron Desjardins (District A12).

The Barrhaven Lions Club continues to hold the reputation as one of the most progressive Lions clubs in District A4.  We are looking forward to celebrating our 35th Charter Anniversary in the year 2015.
